‘KPop Demon Hunters’ dethrones ‘Red Notice’ to become Netflix’s biggest film ever

Netflix has announced that KPop Demon Hunters has become its most viewed film ever, surpassing the previous record-holder Red Notice. Since debuting in June, the animated musical has been streamed more than 236 million times worldwide, outpacing the 230.9 million views of the Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot action comedy.

The film follows the fictional K-pop girl group Huntr/x, who balance careers as global music stars with secret work battling demons. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, with a screenplay co-written alongside Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the film combines Korean cultural elements with high-energy music and action.

The voice cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong and Ji-young Yoo. The soundtrack has been a major driver of the film’s popularity, with tracks written by a roster of K-pop veterans. Songs from the movie have topped both Billboard and Spotify charts, with the track Golden reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this month.

Beyond streaming success, the film also performed strongly in cinemas. Netflix released a limited sing-along version in select markets, which went on to become the top-grossing film in the US box office during its opening weekend. The version has since been made available globally on Netflix.

The film’s rise was fueled by social media buzz, with fans sharing clips and memes that boosted visibility through the summer. Critics and audiences have praised its vibrant animation and music, as well as its blend of traditional and contemporary Korean culture.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters has also sparked early conversations about a potential sequel as well as an Oscar campaign this year, though no official announcements have been made. For now, it stands as Netflix’s biggest film to date, both on screen and on the music charts.
