Sunjay J Kapur, Chairman of Sona Comstar and the former husband of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, died of a heart attack in the UK on June 12. He was 53.
Sunjay, an industrialist, and Karisma, a leading Hindi film actress of the time, were married in 2003. The couple became parents to daughter Samaira in 2005 and son Kiaan in 2011.
The couple had a troubled marriage. In 2014, Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce through mutual consent but later withdrew it over disagreements over financial settlements and the custody of their children. An acrimonious legal battle ensued. In her divorce plea, Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic abuse. Their divorce was finalised in 2016. The same year, Karisma Kapoor filed a domestic violence case against Sunjay and his mother, as well as a dowry harassment case.
After the separation, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev.
Karishma Kapoor’s sister Kareena Kapoor Khan, her husband Saif Ali Khan, and close friend Malaika Arora arrived at her residence late on Thursday night to provide emotional support.
Sunjay Kapur was the chairman and non-executive director of automotive tech company Sona Comstar. In a statement, the company said, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J. Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53.”
